Mantis 80m

Dixon Yacht Design and Ken Freivokh Design have collaborated on an 80m ketch concept, the Mantis 80, offering a luxury lifestyle that is likely to attract yacht owners as well as sailors.

‘The size and some of the features are something motor yacht buyers could relate to,’ says Bill Dixon, who designed the exterior. ‘If you take the internal volume, the deck space, the big aft space – it definitely has features that cross over.’

Indeed, the upper deck owners’ suite of the Mantis 80, featuring a full width master cabin, is unusual for a sailing yacht both in its size and position. Guest accommodation is on the same level. Above is a sky lounge with a pilot house, as well as generous deck space protected by a high bulwark.

Particularly spectacular is the saloon. Sections of the hull fold down and doors open to create a completely open lounge. Together with the room’s many windows this makes it an exceptionally light, airy space.

Ken Freivoch’s interior style is simple and modern, featuring a staircase that plunges through all three decks. This style matches Dixon’s overall concept for the yacht, to create a flybridge performance yacht with the flybridge deck integrated into the hull line – creating a yacht with smooth, clean lines.

‘What we trying to produce a really sleek, simple design, to get away from the layered effect of lots of boats. With very good deck spaces, very good interior accommodation and a very slick line to it,’ says Dixon. ‘Life rafts are hidden, winches are hidden, we have very clean simple lines.’

The designers have also taken account of the fact that the owner of this yacht may want to spend time socialising on shore, as well as sailing.

‘A vessel of this size needs a reasonable draught for stability, but obviously you have to be realistic with that draught because you want to get at least close to ports,’ says Dixon. ‘So it’s a lifting keel, but it’s not lifting all the way through the interior space. It’s actually going through the lower crew space, it doesn’t interfere with the owner’s accommodation at all.’

The design features an owners’ suite, two double guest cabins, a guest suite and a guest twin. She’s an aluminium ketch with an 84m mast.
