Heureka

SY Heureka was launched during the Summer of 2014 for an owner wanting fast passage times and a rewarding to sail.

This was not the only requirement in the design brief of this beautifully built yacht. She had to be sleek, visually striking and with a clean and uncluttered deck.  Meticulous design detailing can be seen in abundance; the recessed chainplates and the headsail furlers, the recessed blade and genoa tracks, the hidden hydraulic backstay cylinders, the oval closed fairleads and the retracting superstructure coaming doors to name a few. Ironically, we decided to keep the mast drum winches on deck, as the practicalities outweighed the aesthetics of recessing them in a winch pit.

Her impressive performance is a result of significant design time and extensive programmes of tank and theoretical testing. Her well balanced powerful hull shape, coupled with a moderate beam ensure she is easily driven on all points of sailing.

Her large High Modulus carbon rig and rigging provides an impressive sail area ratio. Not wishing to be driven by current design trends, we decided against an excessively plumb bow, to eliminate excessive wetness from beating to windward fully powered up. The hull’s forefoot is relatively deep, allowing us to add some form to the bottom sections, ensuring that the vessel will track nicely and not slam unduly in a seaway.

The vessel features a development of our Award-winning telescopic keel system which gives just under 6m of draft fully extended, whilst not hindering the interior layout with large space robbing keelboxes This is evident in the openness of the saloon.  The keel system was supplied by APM in Italy, a leading force in lifting keel technology.

What makes this such a successful project is the holistic approach to the design. Design is often about the challenge of reconciling what can often prove to be very conflicting requirements. We believe that we have taken great care to balance the luxurious owner’s accommodation, appropriately with the technical and crew areas. Rhoades Young Design provided the interior design which is both peaceful and minimalistic using a combination of materials, fabrics and textures.  Natural light is in abundance throughout the interior.
